Representation

Arnold Schwarzenegger - The Graham Norton Show

In this clip men are presented in a variety of ways. The host, Graham Norton, is represented as a more feminine character in regards to the more dominant representation of men. This is suggested in the way Graham Norton is so open with his sexuality and how he makes comedic jokes in regards to his sexuality. Furthermore, he challenges the dominant ideologies by his high pitched voice and camp persona, this is shown at 2:21 when he points to a picture of a man stretching in a more revealing pose. This refers to Tessa Perkins theory of stereotypes being positive or partly true.
On the other hand, men are also represented in a masculine more muscular way. This is shown through the use of having pictures of Arnold Schwarzenegger flexing his muscles. This reinforces the dominant representation of men as it shows them as being capable of protecting the things they love. This refers to Andy Medhurst's theories of shorthand but carries value judgement.

James Bond and The Queen London 2012 Performance

In this clip London is represented as being prestigious and elite. This is shown through the fact that what is being shown is not the rural sides of London but the places that tourists would like to see. This is also shown through the way tourists in this footage are foreigners, this suggests that London is an elite place through the way other countries are coming to London. This reinforces the dominant representation of London as it is seen to be one of the greatest places on this planet.
Men are also represented in this country but through a variety of ways. The first being patriotic well dressed men with an urge to protect the ones they care for and their country. This reinforces the dominant representation as men are seen to be the sole things that keep our nation standing. This links to Andy Medhurst's Theory of short hand but carries value judgement as it is trying to get the people watching to visit London.

Some Girls - BBC3 Trailer

In this clip women are represented in a variety of ways. The first being; Blond women are stupid. This is shown at the start of the trailer with Amber being blond and stupid. This subverts the stereotype of women yet it reinforces the stereotype of blond women. This links to Andy Medhursts theory of short hand but carries value judgement.
The second being Holli, she completely challenges the dominant representation of females this is because women are meant to be clam subtle and not aggressive. Whereas Holli was the complete opposite. Furthermore, she also challenges the dominant representation of women as she is more built than the stereotypical women.
Finally, Viva is the only female in this trailer who shows traits of the stereotypical women. One of these traits would be that she is cunning and smart. This also links to Andy Medhurst's theory of short hand but caries value judgement.

Representation: Blog Task

Representation

Representation: Blog task

Find a YouTube clip from film or TV and complete the same activity we have just done in class:

1) List the different people/groups represented in the trailer (men/women/Americans etc.)
White women and White Men, black people, Americans and America.

2) For each group, decide whether the representation is a dominant or alternative portrayal.

White women and White men the representation is dominant as it potrays the the white female protagonist, Black Widow as being the damsel in distress as well as potraying Iron Man and Thor as being God like figures. On the other hand, it potrayed Black Widow in an alternative representation as she is an assassin.

3) What stereotypes can you identify in the trailer?

In this scene woman have been represented as being the victims or the damsel in distress this is evident in the way the hulk had to save Black Widow. However, the dominant stereotype of woman have been challenged as one of the main protagonists is an assassin with the capability to kill a squad of men. This is effective as it shows how society has evoloved and how how woman and men have equal status. In addition to this with Hulk Black widow is seen as a sexual figure or a figure for men to gaze at.

Dependency Theory: Blog Task

Dependency Theory

Rokeach and Defleur took Uses and Gratifications one step further in 1976 in suggesting that people have become dependent on the media.

With Dependency Theory, they suggest that people rely on the media for information determining their decisions. This means the media can create many different feelings such as fear, anxiety and happiness.

TASK 1:

1) What do YOU primarily use the media for: entertainment or information? ( or something else?)

I primarily use the media for entertainment however I tend to use the media for information regarding school and the world around me.

2) To what extent do you feel we are dependent on the media?

I think that we are absolutely dependent on the media whether it be Digital media or Print Media. This is because for the world around us their is media every where compared to what there use to be, new print products, new technology to see digital media and countless other methods of observing media in general.

3) Has our dependence on the media changed over the last 10 years? How?

Our dependency over media has changed over the last 10 years due to the fact that now the media being shown is not only the dominant ideologies but is also the alternative ideologies which could suggest that the audience want to hear both sides of a story instead of one.

4) Read this Telegraph article - does this support Depndency Theory? What is your personal opinion on this issue?

This Telegraph article supports the Dependency Theory because it suggests that ever since the internet the population have been relying on the internet to gather information regarding the media and the type of media they like to associate with. However, it also challenges the dependency theory as it is only related to the use of the internet and completely takes out the the fact of that their is also print media.

I agree with the dependency theory as it suggests that the media is solely based around the internet and the use of digital media which in this day and age is. However, in this day and age there still is the older generation who go under the psychographic of the resigned which suggests that they are brand loyal and do not want to get out of their comfort zone to trying out digital media.

Audience Theory: Blog Task

Audience Theory

Hypodermic Needle Theory: This is a theory that suggest that the audience has ideologies "injected" into them.

Two Step Flow Theory: This is a theory that suggest that "opinion leaders" influence the audience and help mediate the text.

TASK 1:

1) Read this Mail Online Article about the effects of video games. How does this article link to the Hypodermic Needle Theory?

This article suggests that audience are passive and that they have no control over how they consume media. It also suggests that the media consumer can easily be swayed. In addition to this it suggests that with teenagers developing and growing the are susceptible to influence.

This relates to the Hypodermic Needle Theory as it suggests that the audience are passive and that they just take what is being said and do not challenge the dominant ideologies associated with the media they consume.

2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case link to the Hypodermic Needle Theory? Why might someone criticise this front page?

This front cover links to the Hypodermic Needle Theory as there is no evidence to back the idea that the Talk Talk hacker was a "violent video game addict". It also links to the Hypodermic Needle Theory as it intends on gaining the support of the middle class. This is because the article is in the daily mail which is read mostly by white middle class people. The myth around the daily mail is that it enjoys causing a moral panic and by having a picture of a 15 year old teenager as their front cover with a negative headline would get the audience to instantly agree and not challenge what the dominant ideologies of the author are.

TASK 2:

1) Summarise the Two Step Flow Model. In your opinion, is the Two-Step Flow theory still relevant today?

The Two Step Flow Theory is a theory that suggest that "opinion leaders" influence the audience and help mediate the text. I think in some cases this is true, this is because the "opinion leaders" share the same interests as the audience that observe them. Which as a result, would make the audience assume that they would have the audiences best interests at heart when uploading content.

On the other hand, it is not relevant today as some opinion leaders should only mediate the media when what the media is saying relates to their specific area of specialities. For example it would not be a good idea for a Youtube Gamer to be mediating the media if it relates to Politics because Youtube gaming and politics are different, the same way David Cameron and Borris Johnson should not be mediating the media when it comes to Gaming.

2) How does this Telegraph article on influential tweeters fit the Two-Step Flow Theory.

This Telegraph article fits the Two-Step Flow Theory as it talks about how tweeters, youtubers and bloggers are gaining more followers then members of parliament which could suggests that if Liam Payne was to try and mediate the text he could effectively do it as he has more followers than David Cameron and Ed Miliband. This relates to the Two-Step Flow Theory as it suggests that "Opinion Leaders" could potentially cause an increase in votes certain political parties if they wanted.

3) Read this BBC profile of Jamal Edwards. How does Jamal Edwards link in to the Two-Step Flow Theory?

This article on Jamal Edwards suggests that he is an "Opinion Leader" as it shows him being as an aspirational role model. This links to the Two-Step Flow Theory as it says Jamal Edwards has been getting millions and millions of views and the fact that he was once put down could make him even more of an opinion leader as he went through more struggles than average youtubers and that is what some people require at the moment.

TASK 3:

For each of the four categories, write about one media text that fits that particular audience use or pleasure. Make sure you explain WHY it fits the category and use images or clips to illustrate your points.

I was not expecting myself to come out as a succeeder as I always assumed I was an explorer or an reformer. I always thought I was an explorer because I've always liked going for things that I have never tried before. I also thought I was a reformer because I don't like to be restricted and try to support new things.

My number one value was status which is from the succeeder's category which was quite shocking for me. My second value was escape which is what I can agree with as I do not want to be chained down by rules.
